About This Spot

Stepping into Chez Anna feels a bit like crossing the threshold into a warmly lived-in home rather than a conventional restaurant. Nestled quietly within a grocery space on Boul. Saint-Laurent, this unassuming spot invites a slower, more intimate kind of meal — one where the hints of familiar Hungarian aromas envelope you and the bustle of the city outside seems to pause.

The atmosphere here moves at an unhurried, gentle pace, the sort that encourages you to settle in and savor every moment. It’s a place where laughter might drift from the small gathering of regulars, and the occasional musical note might rise from the piano or guitar that guests are welcome to play. Behind the counter and around the tables, you sense a family’s touch, with no rush or fuss, just honest, heartfelt hospitality.

At the heart of the experience is a menu that doesn’t shout but quietly demonstrates a deep-rooted passion for authentic Hungarian comfort food. Plates arrive generously portioned, each bite carrying the richness of meals cooked from scratch — subtle layers of paprika, tender meats, and the warmth of traditional recipes. Whether you’re drawn by the savory depth of a goulash or the comforting familiarity of schnitzel, there’s a feeling that each dish has been crafted with care, meant to nourish not just the body but the spirit.

The dining room, though modest, feels like a space where stories unfold over shared meals and where the love for food and culture is palpable in the way every detail, from the sour cream on cucumber salads to the crisp edges of strudel, comes together. Chez Anna quietly celebrates Hungarian heritage in a way that invites you to slow down, relish good company, and feel a little closer to home, even if you’ve never been.

Wow. Chez Anna’s is the real deal. The food here is next-level, pure comfort, pure flavour, pure love. It honestly feels like walking into someone’s home and being served the kind of Hungarian cooking that you can’t find anywhere else in Montreal. Every dish was bursting with flavor, rich, hearty, and made from scratch. You can taste the care in every bite. It’s the kind of food that makes you slow down and just enjoy the moment. On top of that, Anna makes you feel like family the second you walk in. Warm, welcoming, and genuine, it’s the perfect mix with the unbelievable food. If you want something authentic, home-cooked, and unforgettable, Chez Anna’s on St. Lawrence is a must. Plus Anna has to be the sweetest person around!

I'll start with the phone call for making the reservation. What Anna told me describes the restaurant perfectly: "we got good food and we got alcohol. The only thing you need to bring is your appetite" You want good authentic hungarian food? That is your spot. Most generous portions I have seen in MTL for a while! So far you understand you come to a mom-and-pops type restaurant, you'll have a great time. The menu is one page, and each meal they make they make well!! Anna is a great host and Lili was a very good waitress, it felt like we were at home. We took the salads, soups and the crepe appetizer. The crepe is like nothijg you had before, definitely would recommend as an introduction to hungarian food. Then the schnitzel, cordon bleu and rabbit for main dishes. All of them delicious. The desserts are either an apple or cherry strudel. both are equally delicious! Anna really knows her craft. I cannot believe it is still a hidden gem, you must visit!

Schnitzel was amazing. Family-owned resto, although service was a bit slow. Restaurant is inside a grocery, so it is not obvious for passer-by.

First let’s understand what your expectations should be before you eat here. This is old school home style authentic Hungarian cooking at a high and genuine level. You come for the food, bonus is spontaneous music for anyone to play the on display piano and guitar, the warm friendly staff and service. They are going to be moving things around so that the dining area has its own section but I find this also quite fun and different. Great portions and very reasonable prices. They also do catering and will also take special (off menu) orders but best to call in advance to be sure they are prepared. Though reservations are not mandatory they have limited seating and it’s best to be sure by reservation. If you are a Hungarian speaker - do feel comfortable to speak with the staff as they appreciate this very much. The menu is not wide, however, everything on the menu is awesome. They have a fruit and vegetable grocery at the front and fresh seafood and fish at the back. Fish variety if not wide but they are all top notch quality and fresh. I personally with to thank the staff and ownership for continuing the tradition of cooking Hungarian food to the Montreal populous as we need more restaurants like yours.

My first time at this place, Great place for a casual meal and the best schnitzel and apple strudel I have tasted in the city. Looking forward to bring my entire family here!!!

Got a Hungarian Auntie? If not, no worries - head over to Chez Anna! It’s your go-to spot for that warm, homemade feel, just like visiting a friendly auntie’s kitchen. The atmosphere is genuine and cozy, making it a perfect place to relax. While the menu isn’t huge, every dish is worth the trip, and you’re bound to run into plenty of locals, adding to the authentic vibe.

My husband was longing for Hungarian food and we found Chez Anna and thought we would try it. We had Hortobágyi palacsinta, Tejfölös uborkasaláta and csirkepaprikás. It was delicious. Anna was very friendly, what a gem to find. We don't have any Hungarian restraunts in Vancouver, BC anymore so this was such a a delight.

Fantastic and authentic Hungarian home cooked food. As my dear friend, who grew up with his Hungarian mother’s cooking, it reminds him of his earlier days eating at his mom’s dinner table. Flavorful and hearty comfort food, feels like a warm hug on a plate. Loved it, and will definitely be back for more.
